Kibera is the biggest slums that we have and it is the most populated. The biggest challenge that the people down here are facing is that they have too few toilets which leads to a phenomenon called flying toilets. I know many of you don’t understand the term ‘flying toilet’, which actually means not going to the toilet but going in a plastic paper bag and then throwing it on top of your house or outside of your house which makes the environment very unsanitary. It is not welcoming and it is the reason why many people become sick. Often they are unable to lead a healthy lifestyle. I have a couple of reasons as to why flying toilets exist.
- According to the research I have done we have more bars in Kibera than toilets- it’s like people prefer to drink and don’t care if the toilets exist or not.
- Businesses: everyone is trying to have their own business and the little space they get they do not think of the toilets.
- Land issues: instead of someone thinking of building toilets for the community they think of building houses to rent
How it negatively affects the community
- It is unhygienic which leads to diseases like cholera, diarrhea etc
- A lot of people are having chest problems: flu
- Its does not bring about a good picture of Kibera and the people living here
Suggestions
- The government should identify this problem and build more toilets
- Putting a dumping site
